How to write better AI photo editing prompts

Published October 29, 2026

A good photo editing prompt says what should change and what must stay the same. Short, vague prompts like “make it cinematic” leave the AI guessing, and the result is often different from what you pictured. A little structure fixes most of that.

Start with what must stay the same

If you upload a photo, say how it should be used. For example: “Use the uploaded photo for facial identity only, and keep the face recognizable.” This one line protects the most important part of the picture.

Describe the change in layers

Break the picture into parts and describe each one clearly:

  • Pose and framing: waist-up, full length, three-quarter turn, looking at the camera or away.
  • Outfit: colors, fabric and fit, such as a navy wool suit with a white shirt.
  • Background: a plain wall, a city street at dusk, a studio backdrop in deep red.
  • Lighting: soft window light, strong side light, warm golden hour, even studio light.
  • Style and mood: natural photo, black and white, painted look, calm or dramatic.
  • Format: vertical 3:4 for portraits, square for profile pictures.

A simple template

Create a [style] portrait of the person in the uploaded photo, keeping their face and identity unchanged. Pose: [pose]. Outfit: [outfit]. Background: [background]. Lighting: [lighting]. Format: [aspect ratio].

Say what to avoid

Add a short “avoid” line for the things you do not want, such as heavy skin smoothing, extra text, watermarks or distorted hands. It is usually more effective than a long list of positive details.

Change one thing at a time

When the first result is close but not right, edit only one part of the prompt and try again. If you change the outfit, the background and the lighting together, you will not know which change helped.

Keep the prompts that work

Save the versions that give you good results. On OMAVI AI PROMPTS you can use the Save button on any prompt to build your own collection and come back to it later.
